    AJAX.NET Cascading Dropdownlist

    Ok, so I finally began my journey towards web 2.0 programming yesterday with the Cascading Dropdownlist and thought I would share on how it works and hopefully help anyone having trouble using it! The example I am going to show will use a SQL database to get the values for the dropdown lists but the code should get you in the right direction regardless of the Data Access you choose.

    First thing you need to do is disable EnableEventValidation in the page directive.

    <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true"
    CodeFile="cascade.aspx.cs" Inherits="cascade"
    EnableEventValidation="false" %>

    After that we need to add a couple of ASP DropDownLists:

    <div>
        <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList1" runat="server">
        </asp:DropDownList><br />
        <br />
        <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList2" runat="server">
        </asp:DropDownList>
    </div>

    Now we need to add a ScriptManager and the CascadingDropDownList Control and point them to the dropdownlists, there are a few other properties of the Dropdown we need to set as well, but since we don’t have a web service yet we will wait to add those properties until later. What’s important here is that we are specifying which dropdownlist to control here with the TargetControlID property:

    <div>
            <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
            </asp:ScriptManager>
            <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList1" runat="server">
            </asp:DropDownList><br />
            <ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown
            ID="CascadingDropDown1"
            runat="server"
            TargetControlID="DropDownList1">
            </ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown>
            <br />
            <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList2" runat="server">
            </asp:DropDownList><br />
            <ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown
            ID="CascadingDropDown2"
            runat="server"
            TargetControlID="DropDownList2">
            </ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown>
    </div>

    The next thing we need to do is create a Web Service that will provide data for our dropdownlists. For my service I created DataService.asmx with the codebehind file DataService.CS.

    DataService.asmx only points to the CS file:

    <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/DataService.cs"
    Class="DataService" %>

    The rest of the code goes into the CS file. The first thing to note is that the CascadingDropDown requires the method are as follows:

    [WebMethod]
        public CascadingDropDownNameValue[]
    GetDropDownData(string knownCategoryValues, string category)

    With the exception that you can call your method "GetDropDownData" anything you would like but the type and params must stay that way for the call to be made which makes getting your paramaters out of the call just a little tricky. Let’s say our first DropDownList’s category is department and the value for it is DeptID which equals 2.. Well calling the knownCategory string will return Department:2; now if there were two dropdownlists one with category Department and one with category Employee knowcategoryvalues would return Department:1;Employee:John; etc. Luckily they made it easy to access these values using a stringdictionary like you can see here:

    StringDictionary kv =
    CascadingDropDown.ParseKnownCategoryValuesString( knownCategoryValues); int DeptID; if (!kv.ContainsKey("Department") || !Int32.TryParse(kv["Department"], out DeptID)) { return null; }

    This example finds the entry with the key Department and then pulls out an int from it’s value, so if our Catgory is Department and our value is 3 it would pull out a 3 which we can now use in our code to get the next list of items. If you wanted to just pull the value as a string you could change the code to look as so:

    StringDictionary kv = CascadingDropDown.ParseKnownCategoryValuesString(
             knownCategoryValues);
            string DeptID = kv["Department"].ToString();

    Either way it will pull the value. Ok, now that we have that out of the way let’s look at the full code for our Web Service:

    using System;
    using System.Web;
    using System.Collections;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Collections.Specialized;
    using System.Web.Services;
    using System.Web.Services.Protocols;
    using AjaxControlToolkit;
    using System.Data;
    using System.Data.SqlClient;
    using System.Configuration;

    /// <summary>
    /// Summary description for CarData
    /// </summary>
    [WebService(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/&quot;)]
    [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)]
    [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService()]

    public class DataService : System.Web.Services.WebService
    {
        public DataService()
        {
            //Uncomment the following line if using designed components
            //InitializeComponent();
        }

        [WebMethod]
        public CascadingDropDownNameValue[]
    GetDepartments(string knownCategoryValues, string category) { using (SqlConnection connection =
    new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MyConnectionString"].ConnectionString)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("GetDepartments", connection)) { command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; connection.Open(); List<CascadingDropDownNameValue> values = new List<CascadingDropDownNameValue>(); using (SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader()) { while (reader.Read()) { int id = (int)reader["DeptID"]; string Department = (string)reader["Department"]; values.Add(new CascadingDropDownNameValue(Department, Convert.ToString(id))); } } return values.ToArray(); } } } [WebMethod] public CascadingDropDownNameValue[] GetEmployees(string knownCategoryValues, string category) {
            StringDictionary kv = CascadingDropDown.ParseKnownCategoryValuesString(
            knownCategoryValues);
            int DeptID;
            if (!kv.ContainsKey("Department") ||
                !Int32.TryParse(kv["Department"], out DeptID))
            {
                return null;
            }

            using (SqlConnection connection =
    new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MyConnectionString"].ConnectionString)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("GetEmployees", connection)) { command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; command.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@DeptID", Convert.ToString(DeptID))); connection.Open(); List<CascadingDropDownNameValue> values = new List<CascadingDropDownNameValue>(); using (SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader()) { while (reader.Read()) { int id = (int)reader["DeptID"]; string firstname = (string)reader["FirstName"]; values.Add(new CascadingDropDownNameValue(firstname, Convert.ToString(id))); } } return values.ToArray(); } } } }

    At the top of the web service you will notice the namespace [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService()], without this you will only get errors, so make sure you place this in your web service! The Array returned also needs to be from CascadingDropDownNameValue so make sure when you create your array you use List<CascadingDropDownNameValue> values = new List<CascadingDropDownNameValue>(); and then populate the values!

    Ok, now we can go back to your code and add our service path, service method, category and prompt text. Also in the second Dropdownlist we need to add a ParentControlID so it knows it will be updated by DropDownList1

         <div>
            <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
            </asp:ScriptManager>
            <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList1" runat="server">
            </asp:DropDownList><br />
            <ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown
            ID="CascadingDropDown1"
            runat="server"
            TargetControlID="DropDownList1"
            ServicePath="DataService.asmx"
            ServiceMethod="GetDepartments"
            Category="Department"
            PromptText="pick Department">
            </ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown>
            <br />
            <asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList2" runat="server">
            </asp:DropDownList><br />
            <ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown
            ID="CascadingDropDown2"
            runat="server"
            TargetControlID="DropDownList2"
            ServicePath="DataService.asmx"
            ServiceMethod="GetEmployees"
            ParentControlID="DropDownList1"
            Category="Employee"
            PromptText="pick employee">
            </ajaxToolkit:CascadingDropDown>
        </div>

    And that is it! I hope this helps someone getting started with Ajax.NET

    C# Toggle

    Since I have had this question asked a few times now I thought I would do a little write up on it for search engines.

    I have found the best method to toggle something back and forth is to use a boolean value with a not clause. The class would look as follows:

    public class Toggle{
        private static bool x;

        public static bool X
        {
            get
            {
                return x;
            }
            set
            {
                x = value;
            }
        }
    }

    Now all we need to do is toggle the value of X and because we used a bool this is very simple because there are only two possible values!

    Toggle.X = !Toggle.X;

    This says if X is true it will be false and vice-versa! To show how it would be used in a real world example I will use a scenario I was given today where someone wanted to only show the top three rows of a gridview but have a show/hide button that will allow it to be shown or not to preserve screen space. I am not going to post the code for the gridview because it could be anything and work with this example but here is the code for the toggle and show/hide:

    protected void btnToggle(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            Toggle.X = !Toggle.X;
            GridView.DataBind();

        }

        protected void GridView_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
        {
            int ind = e.Row.RowIndex;
            if (Toggle.X == false)
            {
                btnToggle.Text = "Show";
                if (ind >= 3)
                {
                    e.Row.Visible = false;
                }
            }
            else
                btnToggle.Text = "Hide";
        }

    And that it is it! Not a whole lot to it thanks to the Bool = Not Bool method! Please note that this is not the best method to show rows if it is a large number because it returns all the records regardless if you want to show them or not. Thanks to Sql 2005 there is an easy way to accomplish this but that is for another time.

      oooh….I know boolean values…and although I did some programming (mainly Visual Basic) this is a little beyond me…but I do understand it …just don\’t know how to apply it…

      No matter, Jesse, just great to see you back again.

      *Scratching head in perplexed and bewildered manner* is this algebra? ;) I think your fonts are messing with your Jess… all I can see is symbols and Chinese jargon! *titters* Okay, since I have zero knowledge of programming, let me just say a) you\’re like, brilliant dude! and b) nice to see you! I really enjoyed seeing the pictures you have posted here. Your niece sure is growing fast, isn\’t she? I chuckled at her telling you the story of the day she got stuck in the mud. Isn\’t it cute to hear little people reminisce? So freak\’en adorable. <smiling warmly> Anyway, I hope you\’re doing well, and it\’s nice to see you. I didn\’t even have to wade through cobwebs to get in. ;) Although, I did have to wade through a few cobwebs of my own to get here. My wings are fluttering madly today, so I best buzz off for now. (Is that laundry I hear calling me? <groan>).

      Take good care, sweet friend. Yvonne. :)

      Jesse, please stop this programming madness. I have just about gone into unconsciousness trying to read this perplexing blog.  Goodness, I think my heartrate slowed a few notches and I have a permanent frown crease on my brow.  Toggle huh?  This looks more like an ee cummings poem than pc language.

      Okay, now "Bool method" sounds a little risque, but I promise to behave, so I wont elaborate my thoughts on that one. Oy.

      Yr too cute, my friend.

      lol, this post wasn\’t really meant for anyone but programmers to search for on google, but I am so glad you all came to pitch in=D Although, unfortunately this will most likely be a lot more of my posting, because programming is becoming my life lately! If you all want though one day I can do a basics of Object Oriented Programming so some of it makes sense to more of you. Doesn\’t that sound fun lol:)

    A very nice weekend!

    Had a great day yesterday with my cousins! From the last visit they found out I had never seen the movie Matilda so as soon as I arrived my little cousin insisted we watch it=D So glad we did too, what a great story! My favorite part is when she learns that people that misbehave have to be punished and she decides her father needs to be punished! So funny=D Now I am going to have to get the book!

    The rest of the day consisted of a wonderful walk and card games. It is funny, cause just a year ago I used to let her win when playing cards to keep it fun, but now I can’t seem to win for the life of me! Pretty soon, she might have to let me win:) The walk was also a lot of fun and I included some pictures from the walk below! I hope everyone else had a great weekend as well!

    I was worried this picture was going to be too grainy, but it is now one of my favorites!

    I am not sure what she was thinking about in this photo, but we had just past two huge bird nests and she was pretty sure they were from an eagle or halk, so that is my best guess

    During the walk we came across this place where she remembered being stuck in the mud when she was younger and is telling me the story

      This cousin of yours is simply gorgeous, she is not only a beautiful girl, she also is an intelligent and charming one! A kiss and hug to here from me!

      Hi Jesse,

      Thank you for dropping by again…are you really now back for a while? I\’m so glad…I missed you heaps!

      Your cousin…I can see how much she is changing just by your pics…of course, in the life of a child, six months can be a huge difference. I can\’t recall this film Matilda; I was wondering about the author maybe being Roald Dahl and now just reading Trisa\’s comments… and your reply. Roald Dahl was an amazing writer of both children\’s and also some very interesting adult stories. A littel before his time, I think.

      Re backing up…oh yes, how right you are. Most of the time, backing up just seems like a total waste of time but when PCs decide to die, oh gosh, thank god for backups.  I was also really rather sceptical about extended warranties on PCs but now…(provided they replace my hard drive tomorrow…the tech is coming out to my workplace as that is what the warranty stipulates), I will always purchase one for any PC in the future.

      Hope you are having a great week, Jesse.

    Has been a long time…

    My little break took a little longer than I initially anticipated! Life gets so busy sometimes and especially right now I just have this urge to learn so many things. Photography has really been a large part of this learning craze and I have to admit that I am having the time of my life! Lighting especially has my attention, amazing what fun it is to play with light! I am still just learning and it is a hobby but here are two picture of my favorite models from this past week and of course there are many more on flickr if you want to look around!

    This picture is supposed to be her looking out at kids playing while she is stuck in the house. It was so funny, cause I told her to pretend this and she said, "so there are kids out there playing and I am stuck here with you".. of course she laughed when she said=D as did I. She is such the character!

    This picture is of grandma where she was helping me test lighting. I need to redo it because well I messed up the lighitng, but I still like her in it!

    Besides photography I am still really into programming, but am just not very good at it:) I still love it but I have sooo much to learn. I did write my first gadget which is on the top left of my blog that shows someone’s interesting photos from flickr! I will be the first to admit it needs a lot of work but I guess we all have to start somewhere=D How it works is I wrote a program that pulls your six most interesting photos based on your flickr id, which isn’t exactly what you might think it is. Actually in the program I wrote it accepts your email, userid or flickr id, but for the gadget thought it would be better to avoid confusion and just get right to the source. To find this id you have to go to http://www.idgettr.com and enter the url to your flickr stream. This will produce your flickr id and you can then just paste it into the gadget. Of course this option is only available when you are in edit mode too. After you set the id you can exit edit mode and viola your pictures appear, or at least they should lol. Have already had some reported issues of them not showing up, so use at your own risk:)

    Well I hope everyone had a great holiday season and I hope to be around a little more this year!

    Just kidding! Geez this place looks nice:) Thanks to all who took care of it while I was gone. Actually I am not really back, summer is over and life is busy, just wanted to let people know I probably will not be spending time here until I finish some things I am working on. I can’t completely give up on my photography obsession, so if you want you can check out my flickr site, but even the photos there are old right now I am afraid:) I am not sure how long this break will be but I will come visit your sites when that time comes so no need to come to this ghost town in the meantime! I really love walks..

    I prefer my walks in the mornings and evenings when you have that dreamy atmosphere, but anytime I am walking I am usually pretty happy. Something about just walking feels like an adventure. It is probably because I am normally either in a car, working or on the computer that I find walking with no purpose so liberating.

    Luckily for me, my little cousin also loves to walk! In fact, I think she likes it even more than I do! When she is walking with you the adventures turn into fairytales and the places you visit each have their own magical aspect. She will come up with the greatest stories of why a branch is on the ground or find a message in a piece of paper she finds! This evening it was a “wanted poster” and the neverending movie that spurred her imagination! So much fun having her around and I really wish she lived closer! Anyhow, I took some photos on our walk tonight and attached a few, but the rest can be found here!

      BMac and I went for a walk last night before dinner. It was really for me becuase I was on the verge of either breaking down crying or turning into a monster… so we went walking. I almost stepped on a baby snake, but BMac saved me. We then decided to race home, and I learbed I am not in the same shape I used to be back in highschool on the track team… But, I do love walks. I don\’t like going alone though, it gets boring. I will have to go check out the pictures… talk to you later hun

      The photos from your walk are great, as usual :)   Your cousin is such a pretty girl.  Kids are awesome, aren\’t they, with their amazing imaginations?  Junior and I went to the beach near dark tonight & played "lemonade stand" (warning:  don\’t drink the lemonade… it consists of lake water and sand in a small bucket… but if you have a good imagination, and pour it out just right, it almost looks like you\’re drinking it).  Inflation\’s getting to everyone though… tonight she told me it was $10 a cup…

      Anywho, I love walking too… I take 2-3 walks a day during the week at work, sometimes with a friend but often alone.  The fresh air and the time away fromt he busy office are fantastic!

    Jazz Concert!

    A friend/colleague of mine teaches music and this summer he put together a jazz band for kids that wanted to participate and I must say the results of his training were really phenomenal! I am not a big fan of jazz on vinyl but “live” it is always so fun to just see the musicians go off in their own little worlds. Some of these kids couldn’t have been any older than 11 years old, but they were all not only amazing, but so into the music you couldn’t help but smile watching them!

    The solos in particular were such a joy to watch, especially the pianist and saxophone player who really put on a show. It was funny cause before the show started the teacher explained that the audience is supposed to clap after each solo while watching jazz and it didn’t matter if it was good or not=D Luckily they were all worth applause though!

    Watching this reminded me of just how rewarding teaching can be and I started to regret that I was not going to teach this year. However, I think I can also do with a break from disciplinary issues too=D

      Both my stepchildren were in various school bands so I used to go to their school concerts which were actually of a pretty high standard (except for bands taught by one poor teacher…Miss Watson!) The kids used to really enjoy the whole experience….they also both performed in the annual school musicals……my stepson got to play the role of the bad/sad guy in Oklahoma…he was so good, I got quite teary.

      There is a particular pub here in the city that hosts the most amazing jazz players/singers. Most definately on my top 5 favourite things about the city! Saxophone is my favourite… if Peter Piper came back and played the saxophone, he would have more than just rats trailing behind him! I\’d be first in line!!  ;-)

      Jesse,
      That is amazing – being able to teach jazz music, huh? And to be able to witness kids play it, well… you got me hooked, buddy.
      If you ever have kids one day, and hopefully this show will still be around…it\’s called Jack\’s Big Music Show, on Noggin. Teaches kids all about the different kinds of music, instruments etc. But it\’s really entertaining too, and very very funny. The muppet like characters are soooo cute – I wish you could see it.

      Guess what? I saw your cat Bean last night! In a manner of speaking. I watched Meet the Parents, again, and the cat character Jinxsie, he looks just like your Bean… \’himalayan\’ something or other. Ben Stiller is a riot… cracks me up so bad :)

I teach different kinds of computer classes but not really as a job, it was just something I did for fun but this year I got a little fustrated trying to deal with discipline issues so I am taking a break. It is definately a very rewarding and great experience, but I just needed a break:)

      Yvonne > I have seen Shrek 2, but somehow I missed the first one! I love the saxophone too! Actually the teacher, that led this Jazz band might be the best Sax player I have heard in my whole life. Seriously amazingly talented player. So young too, it amazes me how good of a teacher he is, every kid he teaches seems to shine and you can see the excitement in their eyes when they are learning! He is really good, I wish I had his teaching skills!

      Cassie > that is really cool about your husband! I am not a big fan of just listening to Jazz on CD\’s, but if I am it will definately be the old stuff. I hope you find more of her stuff, I would like to hear her sing

      I\’m not a huge jazz fan, but there is something about listening to it live that makes it so wonderful.  sounds like fun.  There is nothing I love more than watching kids be creative.  I can\’t wait for Conor to do that.  Irish dancing is big in my family.  My cousin is Tim O\’Hare he has a bunch of schools in Detroit, Chicago and other places.  He was the world champion Irish dancer for 4 years.  (he beat Michael Flatley)  All of my cousins kids are taking lessons.  I can\’t find any here in Vegas.  I really want Conor to learn it.  He loves music so much.

      Live music is truly uncomparable to vynl… unless you are Everclear which SUCK ASS live… LOL.  Even better, its GREAT to watch kids in their fullest of potential… and thrive.  Each time I read a story about a teacher… it makes me want to go back to school and become a teacher.  It was something I should have done back in the day when everyone was telling me that was my calling and yet… circumstances were not condusive for such endeavors…. and yet – it\’s still not too late.  But anyhow… I love Smooth Jazz… Acid Jazz and the classics… I really do love jazz – such a great way to enhance any form of atmosphere!

      Now… I\’ve dated my share of musicians… especially bass players…. so I am slowly learning the differences between the different instruments and companies… The Gibson is a beautiful piece of instrument but I do have to admit… I have never heard of a Jackson Dinky XL… so I learned something new today!

      Hope all is well with you!

      JD > hey, nice to meet you! My parents call me JD=D Middle initials. The violin is so awesome and hard to play! Yes, I do have a pic of SillyVes. I\’ll have to go digging for it though.  He was a skinny, short haired orange cat. He looked like a wild desert cat.  Very exotic. If I find one tonight, I\’ll post it on Flickr.
      I don\’t think that snarling pic is scary at all!  I really like it. Even my hub likes it – and he doesn\’t have an artistic bone in his body. So yeah, that would be awesome if you could sign that pic of Bean and send it to me… I have to supply an address, don\’t I?… ok, I\’ll em the details.

      thanks Jess!

      @Jesse… teaching – I used to teach French – privately.  But I don\’t do that anymore… I now occasionally teach Tarot cards and Palmistry… LOL… but not what one has in mind when sending your kids to school nowadays… unless you are Harry Potter…. hmmmm – now that would be a school I would love to teach at… Right now, if I ever become a teacher, I want to teach World Religions… to teach tolerance and diversity.  That combined with Guidance Counselling… I would LOVE to do… so I\’ve started looking into such things…

      I haven\’t been to too many concerts in my life but I would have to admit that the best ones have been Collective Soul and Def Lepard… But I can say that I got to see Celine Dion before she was ginormous… back in the day when she was just an ugly duckling with horrible teeth and sang only in French!!!  Yes… in Quebec, our French speaking Province from where she hails… was a big fan of her.  Many think she bailed and jumped ship… meh – after hits like the Titanic… I\’d jump ship too.. litterally LOL…

      Hope your week is going well…
      Ciao!

      Oh, and your comment about the black rimmed glasses… I agree. They make (almost) everyone hot!

      If you were wanting to see the movie, you should. I was for sure that the previews showed the only funny parts of the whole movie, but that was not the case. Oh yeah, and don\’t leave early… there are funny clips right before the credits of the movie… too funny. I could imagine the look your grandma gave you… the same one I gave to BMac when he said he wanted to see it… he he..    :)

    I love music!

    Music was always big in my family! My dad not only owned a music store for a short time but can also play anything with strings. He is such a talented musician and especially when I was little he used to perform with his friends at our house and I used to look forward to them visiting so much. Forget concerts, we had the best band in the world as the house band. He also led the music for the church and although I can’t recall a single sermon you can bet I know pretty much every song he ever sang. For Christmas when I was around 15 I got my very own guitar, a Jackson Dinky XL which is to this day the greatest gift I have ever received. All through high school that guitar was my companion. It didn’t matter where I was going, that guitar was coming along and if it wasn’t you knew I would find one wherever I was going. I was never very good, but it didn’t really matter. As long as I was playing I was happy in my own little world.

    Even today if things get bad or I am sad I can always count on my guitar to take me away from it all, although these days I prefer it acoustic:). Music should be a part of everyone’s lives in my opinion! The greatest escape

    • Karen 6:20 pm on August 3, 2006 Permalink | Reply

      I can\’t play a single instrument, but I love music too.  I sing all the time & when I was young, I often wrote little songs to sing for my family.  They were never very good, but I enjoyed them (I don\’t know whether my audience did, though).

      I agree, music should be a part of everyone\’s life.  I don\’t understand this, but my child doesn\’t like music.  I played music all through the pregnancy with her, all through her infancy and toddlerhood, and now as a pre-schooler, she always wants silence in the car (well, no music anyway – she prefers to talktalktalktalk and ask a gazillion questions).

      Anywho.  Happy day!

    • Jesse D 8:53 pm on August 3, 2006 Permalink | Reply

      I am sure your audience loved them very much Karen! I can\’t believe Jr. doesn\’t like music! She will come around soon I am sure:) I never performed for people on my own, but being in a musical family I was forced to participate in many talent shows and plays, some of which I loved and some I was sooo embarressed=D. I think you should learn to play an instrument Karen! It really is a great thing to do anytime or mood you are in. I hope you have a good night!

      Oh, I also need to edit something in my entry:) I am pretty sure I got the guitar for Christmas and not my birthday, not sure why I thought it was my bday=D

      Holy cow! I got on your space. I didn\’t want to point any fingers… but when I mentioned I was having problems with some people\’s spaces, I was actually talking about yours! I tried many times, but it would just freeze until I Ctrl+Alt+Del my way out of it… sorry man, but I made it somehow, now! I, too love music. I really wish I had been given a chance to play something growing up. It was never an option for me, though. I think I would love the piano. How typical, right?!? Well, I left you a reply to your comment on my space, thinking I couldn\’t get to yours…. so now you get two really long comments from me. One here and one there. Ok, I will stop now! Good night!

      Jesse, do you think you could play something, record it and put it on your space for us to hear?

      Which church songs do you remember singing or playing? I\’m very interested to know :)

      I\’m 30 now… do you think I could learn to play the guitar? Is it difficult?

      Sasha > I am so sorry, it was crashing my computer too! I think I just had too many entries on the home page. So sorry about that. I too want to play the piano!! In fact I am thinking of taking lessons, lessons in guitar too! I learned the cords from my dad, but I never really took lessons or learned to read music and I really want to! I am still DayDreaming about traveling=D

      Grace > I never played at church, that was my dad! He played all the classics but also many that he wrote himself, or at least that was my impression. In fact I have never played for anyone besides my friends in high school:) I am very very shy. About recording something for the site, I will see what I can do.. I have a friend that I think will help me making it sound decent maybe=D Like I said, I am not good just really love it! You should totally start playing though Grace! I don\’t think it is ever too late, although in my opinion it is very hard. I have some limitations that are for another blog entry, but for me it is really difficult. Although I saw a guy who played with his toes this week on tv so I guess to many I have it easy=D

      I can\’t be the only one who wants to just reach out and squeeze you — I think you could possibly have "groupie" potential now, Jesse! I\’m not surprised at all that you have a love for music – you have that calm & easy way about you. My church has 3 or 4 different bands that play (songs like Mercy Me, Mathew West, Jeremy Camp, etc)… needless to say, we don\’t attact a lot of seniors, but there\’s the odd one; your dad would probably love it! I have no doubt that no matter the obstacle, you would find a way to achieve your goals. Get those lessons, we want to hear your riff!!  Play some funky music, white boy!  =D

      Thanks for stopping by my space.  I love all your pictures.  Both my brothers and my dad plays the guitar.  Sometimes they would just sit around and play together.  I tried learning to play the guitar but I\’m like all thumbs when it comes to the guitar.

      I guess the guitar is like your blankie, huh?  Something that, no matter what, after taking it out, makes u feel better.  I guess the only thing I have that makes me feel better after a bad day is my cat…..and my shopping addiction.  :)   Anyway take it easy!

      Yvonne > I think you are right, my dad would love that! When he first started playing for the church it was just two or three people, but as the church got bigger the band did too! I remember when they added the bass and drums there was definately some talk=D They were soo good though! My dad put his own spin on most of the songs too, he is such a great singer too. Hehe, I would really love lessons, I should just do it! Do you play any insturments Yvonne?

      Nikki > My little bother is so amazing on the guitar it is ridiculous and he and my dad play constantly! Sounds a lot like your dad and brother:). I really love listening to them, maybe one day I will be good enough to join in! Do you play an instrument? The guitar is definately my blankie:) I just feel safer knowing it is around and especially in high school if I was uncomfortable with where I was, I could start to play and I would forget about everything around me. A life saver for sure:) Thank you for stopping by!!

      I really think you should do it… do it, do it, do it!! =D Unfortunately, I always had a hard time learning to play any instrument in school. Being a lefty, everything was a@@ backwards, which frustrated me to no end! We always had music in our house (still do), but it was never the "live" version. ;-) I remember sitting on the floor beside the huge Hi-Fi when I was about 4 or 5, singing along to the Bay City Rollers – I knew the chorus of "Rock\’ n Roll Love Letter" like nobody\’s business!

      So… are you looking through the yellow pages yet?  Do it, do it, do it!! =D

Left handed people are the most discrimated against people in the whole world! Are you left footed too? I am lost when it comes to my left hand, but both of my feet are about even, which really came in handy for soccer! Hope you are having a good day Yvonne!

      Am I left footed too… LoL  (wait a minute, I am left footed! Two left feet actually… how did you know?!). I\’m not sure if this is notable or not, but I\’ll tell ya anyway… there are many things I can do with my right hand also. Just last week I discovered something new. Spencer & I were playing raquetball (no rules, just hitt\’en the ball around); the ball came to my ride side, and just like that, with no hesitation, I just switched hands and hit the ball! Who knew I could do that! My eleven year old was thoroughly impressed.  ;-)

      Okay… who are the Bay City Rollers. *sigh*. I\’ll admit, I probably wouldn\’t know either, had it not been for the fact that I have three older brothers, whom I absolutely adored and trailed everywhere. My brother James would let me listen to music with him… I was just little… probably 4 yrs old when he introduced me to the Bay City Rollers. I knew one Chorus off by heart (still know it):

      Yvonne > two left feet=D, you are too funny. Although, I feel that way with my hands! I was thinking that your song would remind me of who this group is, but it is not the case, No idea:). That is impressive that you can switch hands in raquetball.. I try in badminton, but it always ends up as comic relief and basketball is even worse! I hope you are having a wonderful evening too! Mine was really great, but dinner for grandma was so horrible! She was a good sport though and even ate it all, poor thing. Have a good night Yvonne!

      Music is a huge part of my life, and has been since before Kindergarten.  Even in elementary school I always had my own record collection (yes, they really were records– I\’m 32!) including Madonna, Duran Duran, Men at Work, Cyndi Lauper, and Joan Jett!  Oh, and I also liked Blondie!  Through the different time periods in my life I have listened to different stuff, based on my mood and what I\’m going through.

      I\’ve never played my own music — just don\’t have that knack — but I love love love to sing along with Liz Phair and my other favorite singers.  I\’m not the worst singer, but I wish I was better!

      You are lucky to have this talent!  Enjoy!

      Music SHOULD be a part of everone\’s life.  I find it very uplifting for whatever ails me.  Music has been a mainstay in my life, growing up in a family of musically talented people.  Get togethers usually involve breaking out the instruments, and those who can sing, do….for hours and hours and hours.  And now I\’m home sick!

      Conor loves music too.  He loves to dance to it.  Dinah used to play this song called Peanut Butter Jelly time (?) I think.  She would put that song on and shout "Conor it\’s peanut butter jelly time" and he would come running and they had their own little dance that they would do.  It was so cute.  I tried to video it once.  I got part of it.
      I\’m very interested in your future post about your disorder.  Your pictures show that you obviously don\’t let it slow you down, whatever it is.  That is great.

      Yvonne > I am sure you are right! Later she was on the phone with my mom and I told her how bad dinner was and then grandma got on and said, “it wasn’t that bad, better than hotdogs anyhow”=D.. She is so funny

      Nicole > I know all of those bands very well! Madonna especially, I really love her newest album very much. Great album to workout to! As far as the new features I like, well I do like the Friends list, just not the name=D I also am very excited about the gadgets integration although they have yet to open it up enough so we can take advantage of it, but once they do, the possibilities are pretty much endless for programmers! I also like that they have made the design wider!

      FrendsRock > I am not sure what your space is about, but I will try to figure it out

      Jeannie > your family sounds a lot like a few families I know! I always get such a kick out of families that sing together, think it is so great.

      Siobhan > oh, that is so adorable! You are making me miss Dinah and I don’t even know her:). I am sure that will be a treasured video forever even if you didn’t catch much of it. Too cute!

    Five Things…..

    I almost forgot with all the changes today, but I was tagged earlier by Grace to list five things. Not sure if I could choose the categories or not, but anyhow I just used the categories she had listed!

    5 Things in my Freezer…
         Hmmmm… I could make up some things I would like in there, but I don’t have a single thing in my freezer. No lie

    5 Things in my Closet…
         Kitties Food and Water
         Kitty toys
         Old empty fish tank I have put off putting back together for fishies
         3 pairs of pants
         A bunch of shirts I hardly wear because I only like a few of them

    5 Things in my Vehicle…
         Usually my Canon Camera
         My CD changer which currently has some cd’s my brother made for me on my last road trip
         Aspirin, just in case I have to take a road trip with someone that talks too much
         AAA Card just in case my car breaks down
         Insurance and registration just in case I break the law
         oh, I also forgot, but I usually have tons of change in my car. I usually let kids clean my car out and keep whatever change they find which is sometimes like 50 dollars=0. Usually they are so stoked:)

    5 Things in my Purse
         Just because I know who Heidi is Grace, does not mean I own a purse! I will keep my diginity on this one and pass:)
    5 Things on my Desk
         Model Painting kit, been using this quite a bit lately but no good models yet
         Picture of my friend Megan
         My Speakers
         Keyboard and mouse
         Two tickets to the play Wicked I am trying to sell

      Jesse,
      5 things to comment on:
      1. What do you eat? Nothing in your freezer? Poor baby!
      2. Pretty standard closet fair… nothing to comment on here :) .
      3. I need to arrange to clean out your car. I can deal with $50 in change.

      hehe, I eat really well actually but I just don\’t really ever eat anything frozen. Usually fresh stuff, I go to the market pretty much daily lol. My change in my car is truly out of control. I remember one time there was like 60 something dollars in the car my friend Tyler got to keep.. he was pretty happy with his pay!

      New spaces was really making me angry last night, but this morning I am happy to see a lot of issues have been fixed. I just hope I can get my green back soon though, cause blue defiantely isn\’t my color:) I hope you have a good day Grace and don\’t let these changes get you down. Glass half full remember:)

      not really Grace:) I am in the industry so I always test things when they first come out, but I really just started to use it for a blog this year. Before it was just a private place for friends and family which I hardly ever used! Glad things are better! I actually like the performance so far this morning, much improved. Pretty happy if I can only get my green back=D Have a good day Grace!!

      Your freezer is completely freakin\’ me out!!  I\’ve never seen such a thing!  Even when I was single I had stuff in my freezer.  Of course one of the things was a bottle of Jager :)   Now our freezer is so full that we literally can not fit another thing in there.  We want to buy a bigger one!  You must spend a fortune on food every month.  We stock up on meat when it is on sale!
      Your desk is rather freakishly neat too.  I can\’t keep mine that way.  I\’ve got crap stuffed in corners to keep them away from the rugrat!  It\’s not going to work for much longer, he\’s getting so big!

      I\’ll clean out your car!  I could use $50!  :)   To bad the slot machines all went coinless!  You could save up some serious gambling money! lol

      Wow.. you are a very clean!  Impressive Jesse!  Well I\’ve had no problems getting onto peoples new site… I just don\’t like the formatting of it and a few other things … It\’s still in beta in a few sections of my blog and that pisses me off.

      Well… hope all is well with you and thanks for adding me to your friends list… I have yet to figure out what that is… is that the same as my list of blog I frequently visit?  Meh… who knows… my friends list has disappeared from mine today… so I have to figure out where it went.

      Siobhan > lol, I didn’t even realize I hadn’t used my freezer in about a year until I saw this category. I do spend a lot on food, I am an impulse buyer for sure and it doesn’t help that I have two very nice markets in walking distance. I love fresh fish! My desk has to be clean or else I won’t sit at it, it just makes me uncomfortable, but I also live on my own, so keeping things clean is easy to say the least:). Yes, what is funny is that my car really doesn’t have much of anything in it besides money. I am so bad, I leave money everywhere. I found some old jeans in my garage last week and there was over a hundred dollars in my pocket! I must have taken someone to a theme park or something the last time I wore them! I have never been to Vegas, but it is definitely on my list of places to see very soon. I don’t know if I will gamble or not, but I really want to stay at the Italian Casino.. looks so beautiful!

      AuntTea > Thank you! I didn’t have much to write about so I figured to keep you from falling to sleep I would add pictures to make it more interesting:). Since you are going to copy them anyhow, consider yourself tagged=D. My fridge, well today there is chicken, fresh parmesan cheese, tomatoes, Garlic, Shallots, fresh basil, shitake mushrooms, Chicken soup, butter, eggs and milk. Not sure what I am going to make for dinner, but probably some kind of pasta dish with chicken. I would post a picture of Megan, but I don’t think she would like that very much.. she is the most beautiful 11 year old kid in the whole world though and the funniest. I do miss the green on your space:(

      KC > tornado watch? Yikes, that is something I have no desire to experience. I hope you stay safe! As for the new spaces, I like the ideas of what they are doing with it and having people more closely connected. I am all for it, but hope they test things more in the future=D

    I am becoming a regular chef!

    First Grace’s wonderful Salmon and last night I made my grandma Sea Bass with Sautéed vegetables. It was a huge hit too!

    Usually grandma eats just a little of everything and is very critical of food, but she called it delicious! Coming from her with food that is big=D I can’t actually take too much credit for this wonderful dinner though, cause my friend Sophie made the marinade which really made the whole dinner. So delicious! I tried to get the recipe from her, but she said it is her secret recipe:). Don’t worry, I will get it one of these days and post it!

    I also hung out with my old friend Travis the bird! He is the coolest cockatiel ever! Well, actually I think he is a little slow, cause I read somewhere they can learn to talk and I used to spend hours upon hours trying to teach him things to say to my then girlfriend, but he never learned a single word:( He does whistle at me though! I wish I had taken pictures of dinner, but I did get a picture of grandma and Travis

      Hi Jesse,
      Just posted re Film No 2….glad you share my love of arthouse films. You would just love this film festival..I am not sure where it rates but I suspect amongst the top 5 film festivals in the world. There are a huge number of films and every year, the patronage just increases exponentially….
      The cockatiel…these birds are native to Australia…and yes, they can be trained to talk. But I don\’t think they are the smartest of birds however I know people here who have found them to be great companions…

      OK… first… the pictures… OMG Jesse – how you capture the essence of the soul of any object, person or animal is beyond me!  Your grandmother is adorable…. and your cockatiel… well now Travis is much like my sisters old bird – it never learned to speak.  It sang to me… and loved me, gave me kisses etc…. and then he\’d get irritated at something or maybe didn\’t like his reflection in my glasses who knows… and take a bit out of anything that was nearby!  Crazy bird…. but he was adorable.

      Now… as far as experimenting being an amateur chef – I say play with flavor – take a recipe as a foundation and build from it… those are the best kind!  I\’ve had a few flops but I\’ve also created master pieces that tantalize the palate of gods… well… you know what I mean!

      I\’m glad Jorge found your space… I hope a few more come your way by means of a link on my space… it is worth the stop!  Hope all is well with you.
